As you set up your Kickstarter campaign, include the below copy in the main body of your campaign description to alert potential backers about the Fund and encourage participation and support.
We need to know that you're joining us on this project, so we need you to take two simple steps: (1) Register your campaign details and (2) agree to the terms and conditions. These steps are required before you launch on Kickstarter to be eligible, so please be sure to complete them.
Launch your Kickstarter game campaign on or after August 9, 2013 and have it end any day on or before August 10, 2014.
To be eligible for matching, you need to (a) meet your funding goal, which should be a minimum of $10,000 (b) play by the spirit of the fund as well as the rules.
If your Kickstarter campaign meets the funding requirements and you agree to be exclusive on OUYA for a period of time—beginning the day you launch on OUYA—we'll match 100% of the project goal (capped at $250,000).
The short answer is NO—kind of. Projects do need to meet our very light submission guidelines, but we absolutely want to support projects that gamers want to play, and we want to help you take risks. Our greatest hope is that the Free the Games Fund enables you to make a game that couldn't exist anywhere else.
No, silly. We're not a greedy BigCo game console. You own your game and are free to distribute it anywhere after the exclusive period ends.
As soon as we receive your email (see above: "Sign It Up") and we confirm that you've accepted the terms and conditions, we will email you a confirmation securing your spot in the Free the Games Fund. If you have any questions or if you don't receive your confirmation email, please contact us at freethegames@OUYA.tv.
Matching funds will be paid out as follows:
50% = When you provide a functional beta.
25% = When your game launches on OUYA.
25% = When the exclusive-to-OUYA period ends.
No. This is a contribution to you. You still earn revenue when your game launches on OUYA, and some of our early developers are already seeing very nice numbers.
No. We only require the OUYA exclusivity if we provide funds for your project out of the $1M Free the Games Fund (i.e., you successfully reach your funding objective, surpass $10,000 in funding, and therefore receive matched funds from us).
Unfortunately, not at this time. We launched the fund to support Kickstarter projects given the great experience we had on the crowd-funding platform, so you'll need to meet Kickstarter's requirements. They've mentioned that Canada will be eligible in the near future. You can check out the latest details here.
Nope. We've been there and we know the importance of making sure your backers get something great in exchange for supporting your campaign. So, you're free to create and distribute promo codes equally to the number of backers that contributed to your program.
All current and future projects must follow the new rules.
